As many of you know, I was in Malaysia with my family during the first week of January 2018 (and June 2019) . It was my mother’s 60th birthday celebrations and the whole family had decided to fly to Malaysia.

It was my first time in Malaysia and it is definitely not going to be the last. I will be writing more extensive guides on planning a luxury family vacation to Malaysia. But as always, I start writing about a new country by writing about the visa process. Do Indians need a visa for Malaysia? Yes, we do. So in this post, I write extensively on how to apply for a Malaysia visa for Indians. We ended up applying a Malaysia eNTRI visa for Indian citizens online.

Important Info: Indians don’t need a visa to visit Malaysia in 2024. Hence this post on Malaysia visa for Indians is not valid anymore.

So do Indians require a prior visa before travelling to Malaysia? The answer is yes. But the process for a ‘Malaysia tourist visa for Indian citizens’ is relatively easier compared to other western countries. Also, there are two distinct ways to obtain an online Malaysia tourist visa for Indians and I will be discussing these two in detail.

Note: There is a piece of news floating around saying that you don’t require a visa for Malaysia if you are an Indian or Chinese national. You don’t require a visa but you still need an eNTRI note before you can fly to Malaysia. This has been the case for a while and this has now been extended to 31st December 2020.

Malaysia Visa on Arrival for Indian Citizens

In addition, you also have an option of availing the Malaysia visa on arrival for Indians. But please note that this is applicable only if you are flying in from either Thailand or Singapore. You need a valid visa for either of these countries and you need to show confirmed return tickets to India.

Malaysia eNTRI for Indian Citizens

Note: Please note that the deadline has been extended to 31st December 2020 for Malaysia eNTRI tourist visa for Indians.

Under the Visa waiver program for Indian nationals, Government of Malaysia has decided to provide Electronic Travel Registration & Information (eNTRI) facility, an online registration facility. An eNTRI note Malaysia will be issued as proof of registration and this needs to be presented on arrival in Malaysia.

We opted for this option since it was perfect for us. This is relatively an easier and cheaper option. But please keep the below things in mind if you are planning to opt for this.

  • As of now, Malaysia eNTRI tourist visa for Indians don’t have any set deadline as of now. Update as of 1st January 2020.
  • It is applicable only for 15 days and is valid only for single entry.
  • Not applicable to Indian residents in Singapore.

US B1/B2 Visa Renewal

Our Experience at Malaysia Kuala Lumpur International Airport getting a Malaysian Visa for Indians

Since my twin sister and family are residents of Dubai, I had asked her to apply from Dubai for a Malaysia eVisa for Indians. I thought eNTRI was applicable to only residents of India.

But when she was applying, she got this clarified from one of the chat support people on the website. They confirmed that they can also apply for eNTRI if they can show a valid itinerary from Dubai -> India -> Malaysia -> Dubai.

Now the fun starts when we land at Kuala Lumpur airport. My mom had wheelchair assistance since her arthritis was acting up. So my twin sister and mom went on the priority lane while the rest of us went for the normal queue for our Malaysia eNTRI visa check.

We took different queues since there were 6 of us (5 adults and one toddler). Now the toddler refuses to go with anyone other than his grandfather if he sees him.

I was the first one in the normal lane to be granted entry to Malaysia. I exit the immigration control and then I go and wait for the others to join. My sister and mom were nowhere to be seen. if you have been to Kuala Lumpur, then you would know that you exit from the immigration control to one of the duty-free shops.

I wait for almost 5-10 minutes and I don’t see the rest of the party. So I decided to head back to see what is causing the delay. That is when I see all of them standing there with a confused expression on their faces. The cause of this was because my dad had India in his ‘Applied From’ while my nephew had UAE in his. This caused a confusion since the officer in charge refused to grant my nephew entry since according to her ‘Only Indian residents can apply for eNTRI‘.

She wanted to clarify with another immigration officer in charge and that is when I walked back in. Till then, the queue was moving quite quickly and my other sister had remarked the same as well. But due to this confusion, most of the queues were being held up. I explained it again to them about how the chat support person had clarified this before our departure.

They want to talk to the kid’s mother when I tell them that she has been granted entry (the kid’s dad is right there behind my dad in the queue) and I go in search of my sister and mom. I find them and then I head back with my sister.

She again explains to them and still, the immigration lady says that this confusion is because of wrong information given by the chat support person on the website. They say that they have to speak to the supervisor in charge.

So the rest of us head out to meet my mom while my sister and family go to speak to the supervisor. After around 10 minutes, they walk back out with all of them being granted access to Malaysia. The supervisor clarified that my sister was right.

Conclusion

It did cause unnecessary tension for all of us. So do check before flying what is the correct procedure depending on your Malaysia visa requirements. This was our experience acquiring Malaysia visa for Indians and hope you found it helpful.

Liked it, then pin it.

    • It was a great information. I’ve planned a visit to Malaysia on March 28 and I’ll be returning on April 3. I checked with chat support if I could apply ENTRI visa since my return date is April 2018. They said yes. But still on reading your post, I don’t want any confusion in immigration check. Do you have any idea about it or it will be of great help if you could share any trusted source where I could get the right answer.

      • Hey Jasmine, Please check with the embassy before you travel. The chat support told us that my sister who is a resident of Dubai can also apply for eNTRI but there was a huge confusion at the airport and you can read about it in the post. Even though our issue was sorted, it is better to be clear before you travel. The immigration staff told us that the chat support is another company altogether and they may not be aware of the rules.

  7. This doesn’t really apply to me, but that is quite a bit of work for an Indian traveler! If I happen to know any of my friends going to Malaysia, I’ll have to point them to here so they know in full detail what to do. I’ve yet to experience needing to do this much to obtain a visa but just shows how much each traveler should do their due diligence before booking a trip.

I wish visa requirements in some countries wasn’t as tough, good to know that it’s not so painful for Malaysia as it is for, lets say, Schengen! But I wish there wasn’t a visa required altogether, at least in Southeast Asian countries.

  12. Hi, I am Indian national but I have a visa for Canada. As my PR application is approved, I will be staying there. So my itinerary is thus:
I will go to Malaysia from India, stay there for 7 days. Then fly to Canada and hat is my final destination. So I am not sure I fit into expat definition.

Can anyone please tell if Entri single entry 15 day vis is viable for me?
I do not have time for other visas.

If I apply just with India and Canada ticket will my application be approved?
Or can I buy a return ticket to India, and never use it. And just fly to Canada from Malaysia( via China). Will they have issues with it?
    Regards.

You mentioned eNTRI should be applied 48 hours before date of travel, which is not the case. eNTRI is valid for 3 months from date of issue, so one can apply well in advance. Also Malysian government has extended the deadline for eNTRI as 31 Dec 2018, which is a good news for travellers.

  19. Hi, thanks for the detailed information about eNTRI application.

We are planning to visit Malaysia for family holidays from Kolkata, India for 7 days. We are 3 people traveling together – me, spouse and our kid (11 years of age). As I know we have to submit 3 separate eNTRI note applications – please correct me if I am wrong.

I came to know that upon arrival in Malaysia, the applicants must furnish the following proofs to the Immigration Officers at the Malaysia Entry/Exit points:
    1. eNTRI Note
    2. Boarding Pass
    3. Confirmed Tickets coming in and leaving Malaysia
    4. Sufficient expenses (Cash/Credit Cards/ATM Cards)
    5. Complete travel Itinerary
    6. Proof of accommodation

    Now I have two questions..

    Q. 1) Is the above list mandatory for Children traveling with parents?? Because my 11 years son can show all the documents in the above list EXCEPT the No. 4 (Sufficient expenses). As he is minor he does not possess any bank account / credit or debit card. Will the immigration officers consider this or say NO to my kid?? (By the way, both the parents have sufficient funds to show them)

    Q. 2) How to show the funds to immigration officers? In the form of CASH (MYR) / CREDIT CARD / DEBIT CARD / BANK ACCOUNT STATEMENT WITH BANK SEAL? Please confirm.

    Thanks in advance,

    Reply
    • Hi Joyeeta, Please find answers to your questions. You have to have 3 seperate enTRI applications for each of you. In the case of children, you do not have to submit proof of funds. Even though we had kept sufficient proof of funds like credit cards, dollars, forex cards to show as proof, we were not asked when we were entering the country. This may vary in your case since all of us are frequent travellers and this could be the reason we were not asked.

      • Hi Soumya,

Thanks for your reply.. i’ll keep these things in mind.

        Q. 3) During eNTRI application, how to upload the “Accommodation Documents” in individual names when we are traveling together and in our Hotel Booking Confirmation Voucher (by Agoda) ONLY the lead guest’s name is printed? Do I have to make 3 separate hotel bookings for 3 individuals (myself, spouse & kid) names to submit the eNTRI applications? (It looks funny to book hotel rooms in the name of my 11 years old kid when the whole family is traveling)… please help me out!!!

        Regards,

        Reply
        • Hi, It doesn’t matter who the lead guest name is. It just needs to show the accommodation details for every day you are in Malaysia. In our case, all the bookings were in my dad’s name and we attached the same proof for the 8 of us, including the kid.

    3) Sufficient expenses – If i want to convert INR to Malaysian currency once i land in KUL, what proof can i show as Sufficient expenses ? Do they consider cash in INR valid ? Or do i need to opt for an Forex or some international card ?

    Thanks in advance.

    • Hi Ankita,
      To answer your questions
      1. Most Indian credit cards can be used for International transactions these days. I have never tried with one that is not an International card though.
      2. Yes, we had done all bookings through Booking and Agoda. It is valid.
      3. Please keep some cash in USD on you in case they ask. Also, keep a print out of your latest bank statement. They usually don’t ask but it varies from person to person.

      • Hi,

I am also traveling to Malaysia this November. I have an inquiry – My bookings are made through Booking.com and Agoda.com, however, when I made the bookings, I chose the option to pay at the property.

Although at present, I have paid the booking amounts to 2 of the 3 accommodations that I have booked, the vouchers shared by booking.com and agoda.com still show that my amount will be collected by the property.

Are those vouchers still acceptable for the eNTRI note?

Also, booking.com does not provide with a pdf for hotel booking confirmation but the details are instead provided on the mail body itself. Please let me know a workaround for this since when uploading the accomodation details, it says ‘screenshots are not accepted’.

Let me know how I can sort this please.

        • We also used the Pay at property option in Booking and we had no issues with our eNtri note. What I did was that I copy-pasted all my bookings from the mail into a single word file and then used the option to ‘Save it as a pdf’. Then uploaded that pdf file.

          • Hi Soumya,

Just one more thing, when applying for eNOTE, it also asks for an address of Malaysia. What am I supposed to enter here? The hotel’s address? If yes, which one? I mean the address the of the first booking or the last booking?

          • Yes, please give the details of the first hotel or the one where you are staying for maximum number of days.

  23. Hi Soumya, thanks for such a detailed post.
I have a few queries though:

    1. I am planning to go to Malaysia with my wife in the last week of November ’18. So when shall i apply for the eNTRI?
    2. We got married in 2017 but haven’t applied for our marriage certificate yet, so my wife’s passport doesn’t have my name in it. Is it going to be problematic? Do we need to give any other proof of our marriage at the immigration or at the hotels?

    TIA
    Sidharth

    • You can apply anytime now. It is instant and you will get the eNtri note immediately.

They usually don’t ask for marriage certificates at the immigration or at the hotels.

  24. I am a Philippines resident and was confused with whether i should apply for eNTRI or eVISA. Based on my discussion with the chat support, I only qualify for eVISA (note that my residence visa comes with work approval, but Malaysia needs the work permit to be specific. Just sharing incase anyone else has the same question.

For indian expatriate who holds a valid work permit/visa is eligible to apply for eNTRI (expatriate). However, if the indian national holds only residence permit/visa, applicant is not eligible to apply for eNTRI (expatriate).
We suggest the applicants with valid residence permit/visa to apply for eVISA (toursit).

  27. Hi Soumya,

This is such a great post! Had a few queries :

    1. We, a family of 5, will be traveling to Malaysia this December with the Entri. How much time did it take you to clear immigration? We are going during the holidays, so I expect it will take at least an hour?

    2. After few days in Malaysia, we will be going to Singapore – planning to go by Bus/Train. And will return by direct flight from Singapore to India. I understand this is okay for the Entrinote, even though it’s not a direct flight back from Malaysia ?

    Thanks in advance,
    Nidhi Menon

    • We went during the holidays and we still took less than 30 mins despite all the confusion. Yes, eNTRI note will do if you are using the exit points by road as mentioned in the post.

  28. Hi Soumya! Thanks for the wonderful post. I would appreciate your inputs with the following query that I have:

    – I am a UAE resident. I have my travel bookings as follows: UAE –> India –> Singapore (6 days) –> Malaysia –> India –> UAE.

    – Points to note are: I am an expat and I would be entering Malaysia via Singapore (Not from India or UAE directly).

    – Given the facts above, would I be eligible for eNTRI?

    My Best! Andy

      • Thanks for your quick clarification Soumya. I too think that I need to take the eVisa route. I am facing a challenge:

I was trying to create an account on WindowMalaysia page. In the account creation / registration page, there is one field under “Current Local Address” wherein we have to provide the “Country” name. However, in the dropdown list I see only 14 country names (does not include India and UAE).

I believe NRIs across the globe are eligible for eVisa but with only a few country names in the dropdown list, how to move forward?

ARRIVAL: Departure = India, Transit = Thailand, and
DEPARTURE: Transit = India, Destination = India.

Is the above correct? Also, the ‘Entering Via’ and ‘Exiting Via’ options will be the airports I am using, right?

Really good details you have provided for anyone who wishes to travel.Just one question you said one of your photos had cream background and so was not accepted so in such a case does it allow you to resubmit after uploading new photo or the application was rejected and you had to apply for new one.

    • The photo itself is not accepted. So unless you upload the correct photo according to the specifications, you will not be able to submit your application.

My travel itinery is India-Malaysia-Singapore-India .
1)I plan to return from Singapore – India so will I be asked for an exit confirmation at the immigration in Malaysia as I plan to exit by land and will be making a bus booking while in Malaysia.
    2) How to get a flight itinery without actually booking a flight for applying for the eNTRI.
    3) eNTRI asks for confirmation of entry and exit from Malaysia,I am concerned if visa is rejected then the amount used to book a flight will be wasted.
4)If I book a cheap airticket, for clearing the immigration, to singapore (provided having confirmed ticket to India from Sin) will it work?

    • Hi Sarwar, You can always book refundable return tickets. So in case of visa rejection, you won’t lose money.

What is the ideal time to apply for the Visa?
Also, I have to book my accommodation and flights now. Is it fine to book them this early? And do they accept bookings via MakeMyTrip or do we have to get the proof via hotel itself?

As per the windowmalasyia.my they mention like
” Applicants residing inside India must have a direct flight from India to Malaysia OR via Singapore, Thailand or Brunei from India. Applicants also must have a return flight ticket to India OR return flight to India via Singapore, Thailand or Brunei OR to any country if travelling by Air”

Is it means that while arriving it is direct flight but departure to any country by Air.

However, whether, returning from Bali (a transit at KL) will it be considered as multiple entry?

Though I have one question about my travel to Malaysia hope anyone can help. I and my family will be travelling to Malaysia & Singapore. We all hold Indian nationality. My family will be travelling to Malaysia via Flight from India however, I will be travelling from USA.
We all will leave Malaysia by land to go to Singapore and then all of us have a direct flight from Singapore to India.
Thus, in our situation can we all (specifically myself) apply for eNTRI?

    Thank you 🙂
