During our trip to Sri Lanka, we wanted to splurge a little when it came to where to stay in Sri Lanka. It was my birthday and our anniversary trip and hence we didn’t mind the additional expenses.

But the good thing about Sri Lanka is that there are so many affordable luxury hotels and so many of them were such great finds.

This list is totally based on this trip as well as another trip in the past and you know that I recommend only the ones that I have personally tested.

Don’t want to read the whole article. Find the Best hotels in Sri Lanka mentioned in the article at one glance:

I know everyone is busy and hence linking to all mentioned in this article. So that you can have access to it without reading the article.

Also, find other important links:

  • Skyscanner is my go to app when it comes to booking flight tickets for Sri Lanka.

  • We took a road trip through Sri Lanka and I used DiscoverCars for all my rentals.

Where to Stay in Sri Lanka (All personal recommendations)

Our transportation in charge was so impressed with my choices of the best places to stay in Sri Lanka.

I always prefer boutique properties when I am travelling solo. But when I am travelling with my husband or with family, I usually prefer choosing luxury hotels.

I ended up going through 100s of reviews before finalising each and every one of my stay in Sri Lanka. And that definitely made the experience unforgettable.

This will be a photo heavy post since you cannot capture the beauty of these hotels in Sri Lanka just by words.

Another point to note that since we had a car the whole time, we did not look to stay centrally and some of these places can only be reached if you have your own tranportation.

Nuwara Eliya

My Pick

Where to stay in Sri Lanka 17

Heritance Tea Factory

  • Luxury Hotel
  • Converted Tea Factory
  • Tea Estates

I am going to start with my favorite one. If you are going to Sri Lanka and you are looking to stay in a tea estate, then this 5 star hotel in Sri Lanka is a great option.

One mistake that we did was that we ended up starting quite late from Kandy, our previous stop and by the time we got to our hotel in Nuwara Eliya, it was past sunset.

And Heritance Tea factory blew us the minute we entered the premises. Since this is located in between the tea gardens and lots of vegetable patches, it took us a while to get from the main road to the actual hotel in the dark.

And the hotel looming over the expanse was something at a distance was such a welcome sight. Even in the dark.

Truth be told, it was a little eerie driving upto the hotel with my husband scaring me as usual with his stories.

Only when I got there, I came to know that the building itself was a restored tea factory and the details of the decor was amazing.

Everything revolved around Ceylon tea and the making of it and was more than 200 years old.

The first thing you notice when you walk in is the big pulley system which is part of the old tea machinery. And another thing is how hospitable everyone were.

We were given an array of teas as a welcome drink and it was so refreshing after a long drive.

Our room came with a balcony but we couldn’t see what was outside because it was dark already. But the surprise in the morning was definitely worth it.

Since Nuwara Eliya is the highest point in Sri Lanka, the weather was actually quite pleasant even in the peak of summer.

Asia Travel Tips

Both of us were famished and ended up having dinner at Kenmare restaurant. I opted for a vegetarian set meal while he ended with his usual Dal and rice combo. Tharun was extremely delighted that he could have his comfort food in another country.

Food was extremely delicious and many of the dishes were made using their own farm to table organic products.

Since it was a long drive from Kandy, we had a peaceful sleep. But I was up just when the sun was rising.

And the view outside our balcony was just mesmerising. Just greenery all around among the misty mountains.

We ended up staying only for one night and that was my biggest regret of my trip.

We did end up walking for a few hours in the tea estates. But many experiences like a walking trail, mini tea making tour, wearing a traditional sari etc, plucking tea are experiences one can experience in Heritance factory. Some are added costs.

You can also buy tea to take back to your home country here.

They also arrange excursions to the nearby temples of Seetha Amman Kovil and Hanuman Kovil as part of the Ramayan trail.

This boutique heritage hotel was definitely one of the most unique places to stay in Sri Lanka.

How to get here: Colombo airport is around 5 hours away by drive. Heritance factory is located around 20 kms outside the town of Nuwara Eliya and you will need to arrange your own transportation. We came in from Kandy which was around 3 hours by car.

Yala / Weerawila

My Pick

Where to stay in Sri Lanka

Doubletree by Hilton Weerawila Rajawarna Resort

  • With a lake view
  • Close to Yala and Katargama
  • Destination wedding location

This booking was a last minute booking and Hilton Weerawila Rajawarna resort turned out to be Tharun’s favorite among all our stays in Sri Lanka.

When I was looking for places to stay near Yala, I had two major concerns when it came to 5 star hotels in Sri Lanka.

The ones inside Yala National park were either not upto the mark or were too expensive to even consider.

And since my husband is not a safari person, I knew I would be doing the Safari on my own and hence wanted somewhere close by where I could be picked up by a tour operator.

That is when I came across this gorgeous property in Weerawila overlooking the Weerawila lake.

It was around 30-40 mins to one of the main gates of Yala National park.

We reached quite late after our Nuwara Eliya to Ella train trip and then had to drive another 2 hours to get here.

And the beds here were the most comfortable and since it was a Hilton property, one of the most luxurious properties in Sri Lanka during our road trip.

I was picked up early morning by our safari operator and I had already prebooked takeaway breakfast the night before.

And I was back to the resort after all the sigh seeing by 11 AM.

My husband on the other hand ended up going to Katargama temple which was just 40 mins away.

We ended up spending a few hours after returning just taking in the beauty of the resort before checking out.

The Sri Lankan food here was just too good and if you are looking at doing a destination wedding in Sri Lanka, then this resort is an ideal spot.

How to get here: Colombo airport is around 4 hours away while Ella is around 2 hours away. You can reach the Southern Coast of Sri Lanka like Mirisssa, Galle etc in less than 2 hours from here by car.

Sigriya

My Pick

Where to stay in Sri Lanka

Hotel Sigiriya

  • Right opposite Sigriya rock
  • Spa amenities
  • Mountain View

This was our first stay in Sri Lanka during this trip and Hotel Sigiriya definitely set the standards for top hotels in Sri Lanka.

It is a 4 star hotel in Sri Lanka and if you are planning to hike Lion’s Rock, then it is one of the best places to stay in Sigriya.

We didn’t end up hiking it since it was too hot and humid when we went.

So we spent our days here, just chilling at the pool or getting a spa done.

The rooms are pretty basic and a little outdated but the view from the rooms are quite nice since everything was so green.

This is where we first had our first Sri Lankan buffet and I was amazed by the number of options. Both during breakfast and dinner.

Both the elephant safari parks of Minneriya and Hurulu are less than 30 mins away from the hotel. Depending on the season, the elephants move between the two parks.

We also did the trek up to Dambulla caves which was just 30 mins away from the hotel.

The only disadvantage is that there are not many places to eat nearby the hotel and my husband was very upset that he could not find some pizza nearby.

There is also a Sri Lankan village nearby where they sell unique handicrafts of Sri Lanka.

The UNESCO world heritage sites of Polonaruwa and Anuradhapura are both around 75kms from this hotel.

How to get here: We drove directly from Colombo airport and it took us around 3.5 hours by car. Ella is around 2 hours away while Jaffna was around 4.5 hours away. We stopped at Anuradhapura on the way to Jaffna from Sigriya.

Trincomalee

My Pick

Where to stay in Sri Lanka

Trinco Blu By Cinnamon

  • Ocean view
  • Close to temples and other activities like whale watching

This is where I ended up celebrating my birthday and it definitely was a special place.

Cinnamon group of hotels have multiple luxury hotels in Sri Lanka. Both in the category of 4 star hotels and 5 star hotels in Sri Lanka.

This one was a 4 star hotel and definitely was something that I loved.

Ocean view hotels have always been a favorite of mine and the best part of our room was definitely the ocean view.

By mistake, I had booked a twin bed instead of a Queen bed and the staff were extremely kind enough to get that changed to a room with a queen bed.

We ended up spending a lot of time in the pool and it was just the perfect temperature despite the summer in Sri Lanka.

We ended up going for an early morning dolphin watching tour as well as an island tour to Pigeon island. The pickup point was hardly 5 mins walk from our hotel along the sandy beaches.

Dinner was fantastic and they even ended up bringing a cake to the room for my birthday.

Koneswaram Temple dedicated to Shiva, the vibrant Pathirakali Amman Temple, and the Shankari Devi Shakti Peetham were all less than 15 mins from the hotel.

How to get here: Trincomalee was around 4 hours from our previous stop, Jaffna. Colombo is 5.5 hours away while Sigriya was just 2 hours away. Our next stop, Kandy was 4 hours away.

Kandy

My Pick

Where to stay in Sri Lanka

Cinnamon Citadel Kandy

  • River View
  • Lots of river activities

Since I loved my stay at a Cinnamon hotel in Trincomalee, our next stop at Kandy was also at a Cinnamon hotel.

By the time we got to Kandy, I had a terrible migraine and I spent most of my time recuperating here and ordering lots of room service.

They do offer river tours and the pool here actually looked rather inviting.

The good thing about the hotel was that places like the Sacred tooth relic temple of Kandy or the Kandy lake was just 15 mins away.

And there were many gem shops near the hotel too.

Jaffna

My Pick

Where to stay in Sri Lanka

North Gate Hotel

  • Close to Nallur Kandaswamy temple and train station
  • Previously managed by Jetwing

I know that very few tourists end up going to Jaffna. But my husband wanted to go there because he wanted to visit a few temples around the area.

Since it is a temple town, the number of luxury hotels in the area is kind of limited.

But Jetwing, another famous group of hotels and resorts in Sri Lanka had couple of properties there.

When we went, both were managed by Jetwing but one is no longer managed by Jetwing.

When I was comparing between the two 4 star hotels in the area, the only difference I could find was that one was relatively newer compared to the other.

And that is why I chose North Gate and for the fact that it had a swimming pool too.

Technically, I would classify it more of a 3.5 star when it came to the look and amenities of the hotel.

But it was comfortable and quite clean compared to hotels in other temple towns I have usually visited in India.

And the good part of this hotel was that the staff were so helpful with their suggestions and they even gave us tips on visiting Nagapooshani Amman temple, which was on an island off the coast of Jaffna.

Another good thing was that it was just 5 mins away from Nallur Kandaswamy temple as well as Jaffna fort and the railway station.

If you don’t have your own car, you can always just take a Tuktuk to the hotel.

They even arranged for a birthday cake for me at midnight as a surprise from my husband.

How to get here: Jaffna has direct flights from places like Trichy and Chennai. From Sigriya and Trincomalee, it was around 4-5 hours by road.

Galle

You would have noticed that I have not recommended any hotel in Galle. Even though we stayed at the Radisson Blu Galle for 3 nights.

When I was looking for best Sri Lanka hotels to stay in the southern coast of Sri Lanka, I was spoilt with choices.

But I was not sure which town to choose. Whether to choose Galle or Ahangama or Bentota or Mirissa.

In the end, I decided to choose Galle since its seemed to be the one which was the most promising with a lot of activities to do nearby.

I was scouring for hotels in Galle when I came across two Radisson properties, Radisson Blu Galle and Radisson Collection Galle.

And both of them had great reviews according to Google reviews. Since I was getting a great deal for Radisson Blu, I did not do my usual research and ended up booking it.

At the outset, it is a great hotel. It has its own private beach and the pool club was always packed.

The rooms opened to an ocean view and it was such a delight catching the sunset over the ocean. And sunrise wasn’t bad either.

But the rooms were outdated and there was too much sand everywhere. And it was evident that cleaning was not upto the mark.

And that is when I did a deep dive into the reviews and figured out most Google reviews were actually about the pool club which had an option of giving day passes for the day.

It was also extremely loud most of the time and incredibly hard to get a good night’s sleep.

And that is why I won’t recommend Radisson Blu Galle.

My sister and family stayed at this property in November called Heritage Hotel Galle and the little nephew loved staying here.

Colombo

Even though we didn’t stay in Colombo this time, I have stayed in Cinnamon Grand Colombo during a previous trip.

And my sister and family stayed at Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams during their recent trip.

Both are excellent choices to stay in Colombo.

Tips for finding beautiful hotels in Sri Lanka

Where to stay in Sri Lanka

These are the things you need to keep in mind if you are looking to stay in some awesome properties during your Sri Lanka trip.

  • I first go to Booking and then search. I usually filter it by the region and depending on my budget for that trip.
  • Then I only choose ones which are rated as above 8.
  • Then I go to Google and check the reviews. While reading reviews, I filter it to latest reviews and then I read through at least 20 reviews.
  • One thing about choosing a hotel in Sri Lanka is that you need to check if the reviews are about the hotel or their restaurant or something else. For e.g I chose a great hotel in Galle according to Google reviews but later out it turned out that most of the reviews were for the free pool pass they gave for people not staying there.
  • Then I check which aggregator platform is giving me the best rates for it.
  • Since we were only a couple and there were no children or elders involved, I chose to book most hotels at the last minute using the Late Escape deals on most of these websites.
  • Also, since I am a member of all these sites and book quite often with them, I get some excellent discounts for most hotels. I also use my credit card points to book hotels for practically nothing in most places.
  • But if you want confirmed bookings, it is ideal to lock in the price at least 4 weeks before your trip.
  • If you are having a driver for your trip, ensure that the accommodation you booked has accommodation facilities for them too. Most 4 or 5 stars usually have this option and this ensures that they get a good night’s sleep too. Some even offer complimentary breakfast for them.
  • Like I mentioned, most of the hotels in Sri Lanka in this list needed a car or transport to get to them. So, please keep this in mind when you are booking a hotel in Sri Lanka.
  • If you are looking at doing some specific activity like a safari or surfing in Sri Lanka repeatedly, then make sure that the accommodation you choose is close by.
  • I like to be pampered and hence I prepare choosing hotels over Airbnb’s in Sri Lanka. There are some great options for Airbnb’s if you are willing to filter and don’t need the same amenities as a hotel. Especially if you want to cook when you are travelling in Sri Lanka.
  • Hospitality was never an issue for us, anywhere in Sri Lanka. The staff in all hotels were the most courteous.
  • Sri Lankan breakfast buffets were included in the price in all hotels and I had such a gala time having dishes like Appams, string hoppers, Pittu, treacle, Pol rottis and Sambols. Since Sri Lankan cuisine is very similar to Kerala cuisine, it tasted just like mom’s food.
  • I spent around 70-120$ per night for all the hotels in this list. Even though all of them were either 4 or 5 star hotels and my discounts and credit card points really came in handy.

Driver Details: Even though we went with NK tours and travels to hire our car for the trip, our favorite person we met on this trip was Chamara, our driver and guide for the trip. You can contact him at +94-776729374 if you are looking for a driver in Sri Lanka.

Conclusion

Choosing where to stay in Sri Lanka truly shapes the kind of experience you’ll have on this incredibly diverse island. From barefoot luxury along the southern beaches to heritage stays in Galle Fort, misty tea bungalows in the hills of Ella, and wildlife lodges near Yala, every region offers something completely different.

Sri Lanka is compact, but travel times can be longer than expected, so choosing accommodation close to the experiences you want most makes a big difference. Boutique hotels and locally run villas often offer the most memorable stays, with warm hospitality that feels personal and genuine.

Whether you’re traveling for adventure, romance, culture, or slow luxury, Sri Lanka has a stay to match your style.
