Ultimate Guide To Visas for Indian Citizens
As someone with a weak Indian passport, it is always a headache to figure out in advance if a visa is required for that particular country. Since it is one of the key issues faced by Indian travelers, I decided to write an ultimate guide to visas for Indian citizens for tourism purposes. I am hoping to keep this updated as much as possible. I have tried to source the data from various sources but since it is something that is constantly evolving, please expect to find some discrepancies now and then.

Ultimate Guide To Visas for Indian Citizens
Since the tourist visa requirements for Indian Citizens are different for different countries, I have segregated the list into different sections. As mentioned before in how Indian travel is different,
“According to the Passport Index, the Indian passport currently ranks 64 in terms of the Global power of the passport. Just to give a perspective, United Arab Emirates has the strongest passport in the world while Afghanistan currently holds the status of the weakest passport in the world with a rank of 94. If you see in terms of individual ranks, then we rank at 142 while Afghanistan ranks at 199. We have a visa score of 64 which means that we can go to 20 countries without a visa and we can avail the visa on arrival facility in 49 countries. Also, having a valid US/UK/Singapore visa can give us an option of availing visa on arrival for a few more countries. UAE nationals, on the other hand, can go to 116 countries without a visa and avail the visa on arrival facility in 57 countries.”
Similarly, getting an Indian visa is difficult for most foreigners and many complain about how it is a cumbersome process.

Countries where evisa is possible for Indians
Even though most countries require a Visa, some countries have made it simpler by allowing us to apply online aka applying for an online eVisa.
Different countries follow different methods but around 24 countries have the facility to apply for an eVisa. Some of the countries are Malaysia, Singapore, my favorite Tanzania, Kenya among them.
For eg: You can apply for an Oman evisa at oman-evisa.com
Schengen Visa for Indian Passport Holders
Europe has been a preferred destination for many people who are traveling outside India due to the string of popular Bollywood movies that have showcased the beauty of Europe over many years. But choosing Europe as your first international destination can be a little tricky since the visa process is quite tedious. The list of documentation you have to include with your Schengen visa application is humongous. I have been to Europe many times in the past and yet the process is daunting every single time. It definitely gets easier once you have an ‘x number of stamps on your passport’
Thankfully, now due to the Schengen visa policy, you can use a single visa to travel to 26 countries in the Schengen Area. Check out my post on how to apply for a Schengen Visa for Indians.
Some things that will make it easier for you to obtain a Schengen Visa for Indians:
- Financial independence is something that is key when applying for Schengen visa. You should always have proof of sufficient funds or you should have a sponsor who is willing to pay for your expenses
- One of the main things they check is if you have an intent to go settle in one of the Schengen countries. By showing enough proof that you intend to return is another key aspect in the case of a Schengen visa. This can be shown by proof of own property/parents.
- Ensure that you have a confirmed return ticket.
- A detailed itinerary of your time during your visit. Hotel bookings are usually mandatory.
- Insurance is mandatory as well.
- Write a convincing and detailed cover letter.
If you are visiting multiple Schengen countries, then you have to apply to only one country. There is an order to be followed in such scenarios.
- Main Destination / Main purpose of travel: In case you are going for purposes other than tourism, then you have to choose the country for which this is intended.
- Maximum Number of days: Next is to choose the country where you are going to spend the maximum number of days.
- Port of Entry: The country where you are entering the Schengen area through.
If a Schengen visa is issued, then you can enter the Schengen Area through any of the 26 countries and move freely among them. The validity of the Schengen visa is usually mentioned in your passport but in the case of short-term visas, it is usually granted for 90 days in a 180 day time period. It varies from case to case in the case of Indians.
Important Note – As of February 1st 2020, visa fees for all Schengen countries have been increased to 80 Euros.
VFS Application Centers
In India, most of the Schengen visa applications are handled by VFS and you can schedule an appointment with them to submit your application and your biometrics data.If you are applying on your own, you still need to go fill the online form yourself before you can schedule an appointment for submission. There are some exceptions to this as evidenced by the below table. VFS charges a service fee for this and this varies from country to country as well as from center to center. You can also opt for a courier service at an additional fee if you don’t wish to go and collect your passport. VFS application centers are usually found at all the major metropolitan cities in India. Please note that VFS does not have access to grant you visas. They only have the authority to collect your applications on behalf of the respective embassy.
